How to support your kids during your divorce

Divorcing parents can have a more challenging experience because, in addition to dealing with their own emotions, they need to support their kids. It can be difficult helping your children cope with a reality you are still trying to wrap your mind around. But it’s possible.

You can effectively support your children during your divorce. Below are three ways you can do this:

Get the support you need

You can’t be fully present for your kids when you are not okay. Thus, the first thing to do is get the support you need while simultaneously supporting your kids. These include therapy, spending time with loved ones and joining a support group.

Self-care activities, such as journaling, going on evening walks and meditating, can also help you be your best self, a version your kids need.

Respect their feelings

As a parent, it’s natural to want your child to feel better. You want to hear them say they are fine and are coping with the new life. Unfortunately, this may put pressure on your kids. They may feel guilty for being sad or angry. This can negatively impact their emotional well-being.

Consider respecting your children’s existing feelings. Create an environment in which they can be honest about their emotions.

Don’t put your kids in the middle

While it may not always be intentional, you may find yourself putting your kids in the middle. For example, you may use your kids to pass messages, fight in front of them or make them feel like they need to choose between you two.

Always double-check every decision you make during your divorce to determine if it puts your kids in the middle.

These practical tips can protect your child during divorce. You should also consider legal guidance to protect your parental rights.
